About Ply Yarn

A Wimberley-based fiber arts shop dedicated to heirloom yarns and structured knitting instruction.

Operational Overview and Mission

Ply Yarn operates as both a sanctuary for fiber enthusiasts and a rigorous educational space in Wimberley. The shop focuses on sourcing heirloom-quality fibers that carry distinct tactile histories. Every skein on the shelves serves a specific purpose, chosen to elevate the crafting experience from simple repetition to a deeply engaging tactile practice.

Beyond retail, the core mission centers on skill development. The environment supports makers at every stage of their craft, ensuring that the tools and materials available directly enhance the learning process. We view the selection of yarn not as a mere transaction, but as the critical first step in a successful project.

Founding and Organizational Evolution

The foundation of Ply Yarn took shape in 2013. Its roots trace back to the Old Oaks Ranch Fiber Arts Center, an institution that previously anchored the regional crafting community. When that center transitioned, a distinct need emerged for a dedicated space that maintained high instructional standards while expanding access to premium materials.

Historical Context: The shift from a sprawling ranch center to a focused storefront required careful curation of both inventory and curriculum to preserve the community's core educational values.

This evolution allowed the shop to refine its focus. By concentrating on specific fiber weights and structured learning paths, the organization built a sustainable model for local fiber arts education. The transition demanded a careful evaluation of which teaching methods translated best to a more intimate retail environment.

Leadership and Instructional Staff

Owner Cassie Marie Orner guides the shop's direction and instructional philosophy. Her approach treats knitting not merely as a pastime, but as a disciplined craft requiring proper foundational techniques. The instructional staff shares this perspective, bringing diverse fiber arts backgrounds to the classroom.

Under Orner's leadership, the team emphasizes the relationship between fiber characteristics and stitch definition. Instructors focus on teaching students how to read their work, correct mistakes independently, and understand the mechanics behind the patterns. This methodology empowers knitters to approach complex projects with confidence rather than hesitation.

Curriculum Structure and Fiber Sourcing

Education at Ply Yarn follows a tiered progression. Beginners start with fundamental mechanics—tension control and basic stitch architecture, before advancing to complex garment construction. While tiered instruction accelerates foundational learning, mastering intricate lacework or colorwork still requires dedicated, independent practice outside the classroom.

The materials support this learning curve. The shop stocks heirloom fibers selected for their structural integrity and provenance, ensuring students work with yarns that behave predictably on the needles. Pairing the right fiber with the appropriate skill level reduces frustration and builds muscle memory more effectively.

Today, every tiered class taught in the Wimberley shop builds directly upon the instructional foundation first laid at the Old Oaks Ranch Fiber Arts Center in 2013.
